چکیده مقاله:

OBJECTIVE: Level of serum homocysteine is remarkably common among patients with moderate to sever renal failure. We assessed whether serum homocysteine concentrations were correlated with proteinuria in overt diabetic nephropathy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 45 patients (29 males, 16 females) with overt proteinuria. All subjects had type 2 diabetes. Data included age, sex, hypertension, serum creatinine, creatinine clearance, 24-hour urine proteinuria, lipid profiles and serum homocysteine. RESULTS: The mean of serum homocysteine concentrations was 18 ± 7.7 µmol/L (4.6-42), having 31 (70%) hyperhomocysteinemia. The mean of 24-hour urine proteinuria was 1515 ± 996 mg, for serum creatinine 1.9 ± 0.7 mg, and for creatinine clearance, it was 97 ± 26.6 mL/min. Serum homocysteine had a negative correlation with creatinine clearance (r=-0.4, p=0.007) and revealed no correlation with 24-hour proteinuria (p=0.9). CONCLUSION: In overt nephropathy in diabetes type 2, patients with higher homocysteine had lower creatinine clearance. However, there was no correlation between homocysteine and overt proteinuria.

Relationship between serum homocysteine and other parameters in renal transplant patients.

INTRODUCTION Hyperhomocysteinemia frequently occurs after renal transplantation. We therefore assessed whether serum homocysteine (Hcy) concentrations were correlated with clinical, paraclinical, and arterial Doppler parameters among renal transplant patients. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed on 47 patients (30 males, 17 females) who received unrelated living donor renal transpla...

Avosentan for overt diabetic nephropathy.

In the short term, the endothelin antagonist avosentan reduces proteinuria, but whether this translates to protection from progressive loss of renal function is unknown. We examined the effects of avosentan on progression of overt diabetic nephropathy in a multicenter, multinational, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. We randomly assigned 1392 participants with type 2 diabetes to oral avos...

Reduced Serum Homocysteine Levels in Diabetic Patients

Background and Objectives: Type 2 diabetes is the most prevalent form of diabetes mellitus and is associated with a variety of complications. Homocysteine is an important independent risk factor for atherosclerotic diseases in both diabetic and non diabetic subjects. The association between these two is still unclear. The aim of this study was to assess the serum homocysteine levels in uncompli...

Relationship between oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines in diabetic nephropathy.

The prevalence of diabetes has dramatically increased worldwide due to the vast increase in the obesity rate. Diabetic nephropathy is one of the major complications of type 1 and type 2 diabetes and it is currently the leading cause of end-stage renal disease. Hyperglycemia is the driving force for the development of diabetic nephropathy. It is well known that hyperglycemia increases the produc...

The relationship between obesity and diabetic nephropathy in China

BACKGROUND The epidemic of diabetic nephropathy (DN) has been paralleled by rapid increases in both obesity and diabetes in China. The aim of this study was to investigate the natural history of DN and the association of obesity and renal function with diabetes. METHODS In total, 264 patients with renal biopsy-confirmed DN were examined from 2002 to 2008 and followed up to June 2008 in our in...
